Integrated Pest Management

Less Toxic Home & Gardening

Our Water Our World

Help create a healthier environment by managing pest problems with little or no use of toxic materials.

Our Water Our World is a program designed to help you protect our sensitive water environment, and your families health.

What you Should Know
  • Pesticides are potentially harmful to your family, pets, and garden ecosystems, and these chemicals have been found to contribute to toxicity in our water.
  • The SVSWA is asking for your help in reducing the risks of water pollution associated with pesticide use in our community.
  • Pesticides should not be disposed of in the garbage or down sinks or drains, including storm drains.

What is Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?

IPM is a sustainable approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical and chemical tools in a way that minimizes economic, health and environmental risks.

Benefits of IPM
  • Pesticides are a great concern for everyone from the farm worker to the consumer, and public concern for pesticide use has quickly grown over the past thirty years.
  • IPM is intended to be safer for the consumer, farmer and the environment. It is also intended to be more cost effective for the producer and ultimately the consumer.
  • So, most evidence indicates that IPM is a great alternative to conventional and organic gardening. IPM can cut production costs, be safer for the environment and also cut down on pesticide use.

Here are some things you can incorporate into your home gardening while protecting your family, pets and water.
Gardening Tips

  • Adopt the less-toxic pest management and gardening practices.
  • Learn more about less-toxic gardening at free clinics for Salinas Valley residents. Call 755-1300 for times and locations.
  • If you must use chemical pesticides, remember to read the label three times: before you purchase them, when you use them, and when you clean up or dispose of them. Follow all label directions. Be careful not to overwater after applying chemicals.
  • If you buy pesticides, minimize opportunities for spills and contamination by buying 'ready-to-use' chemicals rather than concentrates.
  • Never dispose of pesticides in a sink, storm drain, or in the trash. Salinas Valley residents can dispose of pesticides, and other household hazardous waste at local landfills or the Household Hazardous Waste facility on Johnson Canyon Rd. in Salinas
  • Attend a free community workshop. (dates and times to be announced.)
