LANDFILL CAPACITY TO EXPAND AT JOHNSON CANYON LANDFILL
Salinas, CA…November 9, 2001…The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) at its September Board meeting, approved the plans and specifications for the construction of Modules V & VI at the Johnson Canyon Road Landfill in Gonzales.
Planning and preparations for the construction of Module V & VI began in November 2000 with Board approval of the project.
With the possibility of increased tonnage at Johnson Canyon, the eleven acres required for modules V & VI are planned as one refuse cell. This project will require an excavation of over 500,000 cubic yards of soil to be used as a visual berm to shield the operation from public view.
The construction bid package is scheduled to be released in October for construction to begin in December 2001. Completion of the project is scheduled for June 2002. The plans and specifications for Modules V & VI will provide environmentally secure landfill capacity in a cost efficient manner for the next several years. Based on the current landfill permit and the current fill rate, a new cell will be built every 4-5 years for the next 35 years
In 1986, a Master Plan for the Johnson Canyon Road Landfill called for the site development of eleven existing and future refuse cells. Module I was filled from 1976 - 1988 and II, III & IIIA were utilized until June 1999 when Module IV was opened..
The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas & Soledad as well as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County.
