SALINAS VALLEY SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY URGES SUPPORT OF AMERICA RECYCLES DAY

Salinas, CA….November _____, 2001…On November 15, 2001 the Salinas Valley will join the rest of the nation in celebrating the fifth annual America Recycles Day, an event sponsored by a unique partnership of federal, state, local, business and non-profit organizations.

America Recycles Day organizes Americans to "close the loop" by actively recycling and buying recycled-content products.

According to Kurt Hunter, Recycling/Hazardous Materials Specialist for the Authority, "Each day the average American generates approximately 4 pounds of solid waste, equating to a staggering 222 million tons of solid waste per year. Therefore, consumers need to make buying choices that support responsible products and packaging to reduce the amount of garbage thrown away."

Hunter continues, "taking recyclables to the curb or drop-off center is an important step, but there's more that can be done - looking for and purchasing recycled products."

Many consumers are buying recycled products without even knowing it. Aluminum cans, steel food cans, glass bottles and jars and paperboard cereal boxes nearly always have recycled content. Many other goods made of recycled materials are of the highest quality and more widely available than most people realize.

We must buy recycled at home; request recycled from the companies with which we work; and demand recycled from our local, state, and federal governments.

Buying recycled helps conserve our resources, reduce waste and create opportunities for economic development. And it helps ensure that we leave a better world for our children and their children.

They promote the environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education and management of an innovative solid waste system.
