THE SALINAS VALLEY SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY EXPANDS LANDFILL CAPACITY
AT JOHNSON CANYON ROAD LANDFILL
June 26, 2002
Effective July 1, 2002, the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA)
will increase their tipping fee at its four landfill sites.
The Authority’s rate increase of $1 per ton, from $43/ton to $44/ton,
may affect residential and commercial customers alike in the member cities
of Salinas, Gonzales, Greenfield, Soledad and King City and the eastern
half of unincorporated Monterey County.
The increase may increase garbage service rates to residential customers
by approximately 10 cents per month for each 32-gallon can of waste and
by approximately $1.25 to $2.50 per month for commercial customers with
a three-yard bin collected weekly.
This 2.3% rate increase was necessitated by action taken by the Authority
Board of Directors in April, 2001, which included the position of imposing
no increase in the cost of recyclable materials, in an effort to divert
material from the landfill to prolong the life of the sites. This action
will also help the Authority to continue to provide AB939 diversion credits
for its member cities.
This increase is necessary to meet all of the Authority’s anticipated
expenses including general operating expenses, landfill closure costs,
postclosure landfill maintenance, capital improvement projects and debt
service on revenue bonds issued in May, 2002.
According to Stephen Johnson, operations manger for the Authority, “These
first of four yearly incremental increases will be adequate to meet the
Authority’s anticipated expenses. This will allow the Authority
to continue to operate each landfill and transfer system in a professional
manner while maintaining convenience and an excellent safety record for
the landfill customer and surrounding neighbors.” He adds, “the
Authority’s $44 per ton tipping fee is in line with other landfill
fees in California which currently range from $40/ton to as high as $72/ton.”

Authority office at 755-1300 or on the web site at www.svswa.org.
