What 55-YEAR-OLD SALINAS VALLEY LANDFILL SET TO CLOSE ON WEDNESDAY.

- Lewis Road landfill, located in North Monterey County since 1947 will close. A formal closing ceremony will take place as Waste Management dumps the last truckload of garbage into the landfill

WHEN: WEDNESDAY (JULY 17TH) AT 10 A.M.
WHERE: Lewis Road Landfill
1010 Lewis Road, Watsonville
Enter at the front entrance of the site and the ceremony will take place at the face of the landfill.
HIGHLIGHTS: - Photo opportunities include a large transfer vehicle dumping the last truckload of garbage into the landfill and any other photos of the site
deemed necessary by the media.

- Community dignitaries, SVSWA Board Members and representatives from the City of Salinas will be on hand to toast the landfill closure and will be available for interviews following the event.

- At the time of closure the landfill will contain 530,000 tons of garbage.

- The Waste Authority will continue to operate a landfill gas removal
and destructive system at the site for at least the next 30 years.

- All waste currently accepted at Lewis Road will be directed to Crazy Horse Canyon Road Landfill and the Madison Lane Transfer Station in Salinas.

The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County.
