LOCAL LANDFILLS RECEIVE SUPERIOR INSPECTION RATINGS

Salinas, CA

November 8, 2002

The four local landfills, managed by the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA), received commendation from the California Regional Water Quality Board for the overall environmental performance over the past few years of SVSWA operation. Roger Briggs, executive officer for the California Regional Water Quality Control Board said, “We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and express our appreciation for the substantial improvement in landfill management and operation since the SVSWA assumed responsibility for the Lewis Road, Crazy Horse Canyon, Johnson Canyon and Jolon Road landfills in 1997.”

The Authority also received a superior inspection rating from the California Regional Water Quality Control Board for their recent pre-winter operations.

According to Frank DeMarco, associate water resources engineer for the Water Quality Control Board, the landfills have effectively completed their winter preparedness program and are ready for the upcoming rainy season.

The winterization activities are an annual preparation of the landfills for wet weather which includes additional soil cover, grading for drainage control, sediment control preparation, hydro seeding with native grasses and flowers, and other general landscaping activities.

According to Stephen Johnson, operations manger for the Authority, “We appreciate the support from our local regulatory agencies and we will continue to operate each landfill and transfer system in a professional manner while maintaining convenience and an excellent safety record for the landfill customer and surrounding neighbors.”

The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can be reached at 755-1300 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday or on the web at www.svswa.org.
