THE SALINAS VALLEY SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY PROVIDES RESIDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECYCLE THEIR WASTE TIRES FREE OF CHARGE!

Salinas, CA

May 10, 2003

SVSWA is conducting a waste tire collection event during the entire month of May. All waste tires can be dropped off at Johnson Canyon Road Landfill in Gonzales from 8 am to 4 pm Monday – Sunday; Jolon Road Landfill in King City from 8 am – 4 pm Monday – Friday and 8 am – noon on Saturday; and Crazy Horse Canyon Road Landfill in Salinas 8 am – 4 pm Monday – Saturday.

  • Tire collection is FREE and is open to all Salinas Valley residents.
  • Passenger, truck, tractor and light truck tires 60” in diameter or less will be accepted.
  • Tires with or without rims are accepted
  • Tires will not be accepted from tire dealers
  • Anyone having 100 or more tires is asked to call 755-1300 prior to dropping off the tires.

Kurt Hunter, Hazardous Materials/Recycling Specialist for the Authority says, “Cleaning up existing tire piles is critical to protecting public health and the environment. They provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other unwanted pests. They can also catch fire, and once a tire fire starts it is extremely difficult to extinguish releasing significant amounts of toxic smoke.”

Hunter continued, “Statistics show that one tire per person is generated per year with an estimated three million used tires stockpiled at various locations throughout California.”

This FREE collection event, funded by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, is an excellent opportunity for residents to get waste tires out of their garages and backyards. For more information please contact the Authority office at 755-1300.

The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can be reached at 755-1300 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday or on the web at www.svswa.org.
