SVSWA HONORS LANDFILL OPERATOR

October 24, 2003

The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) Board of Directors
at its September 18th meeting honored their landfill operator for outstanding performance.

Representatives from Norcal Engineering & Construction Services were presented with a bonus check in the amount of $711,000 for their superior operations of the Salinas Valley
landfills.

The Authority integrated performance incentives into Norcal’s operating contract in an effort to maximize waste compaction density requirements at each landfill. This increased compaction of the waste has given the Authority additional refuse space at each site. This efficiency in trash compaction has saved the Authority over $2.2 million in airspace at Crazy Horse landfill in Salinas and $350,000 in airspace at Johnson Canyon landfill in Gonzales. Last
year Norcal was awarded an incentive bonus of $500,000 for their compaction efforts.

Norcal took over operation from Waste Management, Inc. in October 2000 for Johnson Canyon landfill in Gonzales and began operating Crazy Horse landfill in July 2001. They are responsible for the operation of scale houses, disposal of waste, recycling and diversion programs to help prolong the life of each site.

“We honor Norcal for promoting environmentally sound landfill techniques and commend the employees for their continued dedication and superior performance”, says Stephen Johnson, operations manager for the Authority.

The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can be reached at 755-1300 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday or on the web at www.svswa.org.
