SVSWA RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS SWANA TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE AWARD

November 10, 2003

The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) has received the Solid Waste Association of North America’s (SWANA) 2003 Silver Excellence Award for Solid Waste Management Systems.

The award is presented to an organization for technical excellence, environmental compliance, innovation, and community service. The award recognized the Authority for its progressive work toward the efficient and cost effective operation of the solid waste system by evaluating and improving the operational procedures and environmental systems at each of their landfill sites in the Salinas Valley.

“We are happy to honor the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority and welcome them as a recipient of SWANA’s Technical Division Excellence Awards,” said John Skinner PhD., SWANA’s CEO and Executive Director.

The SVSWA was honored at a special luncheon for Excellence Award winners held during SWANA’s annual conference, WASTECON, in St. Louis Missouri, on October 16, 2003. Board President Fernando Armenta and Board Member George Worthy accepted the award.

SWANA’s Technical Division Excellence Awards recognizes the superior work in 13 disciplines within the field of solid waste management, ranging from recycling and marketing to waste-to-energy and public education. The program has been in existence for over 10 years and has grown into one of the most premier and competitive programs in the industry.

The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can be reached at 755-1300 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday or on the web at www.svswa.org.
