RECYCLE-RAMA PROMOTES RECYCLING EDUCATION IN LOCAL SCHOOLS

February 4, 2004

Picture if you will an interactive musical game show with clever and original questions regarding waste reduction, and a cast of characters dancing to urban rhythms among a flashy set and colorful costumes.

This is just a small excerpt from the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority’s school assembly program that was produced to show students how waste reduction and recycling are linked to resource recovery.

“Recycle-Rama”, a 25-minute, highly-interactive and informative program will premier on February 6, 2004 at Mission Park School in Salinas with two shows at 10:15 and 11:00 a.m.

The Authority has implemented visual and oral recognition practices to spread the message. Much like the events one sees on Nickelodeon, the students are encouraged to answer questions related to facts they learned earlier in the show as well as use tactile props to instill the correlation between reusable and recycled products.

According to Alan Styles, Recycling/Hazardous Materials Specialist for the Authority, “The show is not your ordinary assembly by any stretch of the imagination. It is bells, whistles, music and laughter all rolled up into an exercise of education through entertainment, otherwise knows as edu-tainment.”

Styles continues, “Recycle-Rama is for audiences of all ages, so join the fun as the Authority jumpstarts our youth to get ‘em involved and excited about recycling.”

You may request the Recyle-Rama Game Show at your school by contacting the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority office at 755-1300 or request a show on the website at www.svswa.org and click on “Show Page”.

The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can be reached at 755-1300 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday or on the web at www.svswa.org.
