Stephen Johnson, Operations Manager for the
Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) has recently been promoted
to General Manager

A graduate of California State University Stanislaus, Johnson has been
in the solid waste industry for over ten years. Coming to Salinas from
the Solid Waste Division of Santa Barbara, Johnson has functioned as Operations
Manager for the SVSWA since 1999 and has been instrumental in keeping
the organization on the leading edge of technology and efficiency in the
solid waste industry.
In his new position, he is tasked with providing environmentally secure,
long-term solid waste disposal and recycling services to the Authority’s
member cities as well as maintaining conformance to the State’s
mandated 50 percent reduction in solid waste disposal. The facilities
he manages are Lewis Road, Crazy Horse, Johnson Canyon and Jolon Road
landfills and Madison Lane Transfer Station.
Among his memberships and affiliations, Johnson counts faculty member
of Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), board member of the
gold rush chapter of SWANA, and active membership in the International
Solid Waste Association. He has taught solid waste related courses in
several countries.
When not managing solid waste for the Authority or unifying four landfills
and a transfer station, he resides in Aromas and enjoys camping, sailing
and travel to out-of-the-way places.
The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of
the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well
as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the
environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education
and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can
