SALINAS VALLEY SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY HOSTS
PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING
May 10, 2004
The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) hosted an informational
public meeting at San Lucas School on April 27th to inform and educate
interested parties about the supplemental capacity landfill site project.
Stephen Johnson, General Manager for the Authority, opened the meeting
by providing background information on the origination and objectives
of the siting process. The audience of over 100 was presented a graphical
display of the criteria that was developed and used by the Supplemental
Capacity Task Force to exclude areas of the SVSWA’s service area
that were not suitable for the establishment of a sanitary landfill.
The Authority hosted this meeting in an effort to gain community input
regarding concerns and possible environmental impacts associated with
the proposed landfill siting, located on Highway 198 southeast of King
City.
According to Stephen Johnson, “The Authority Board desires to be
proactive in the development of long-term landfill capacity to its member
cities. This landfill siting project in Southern Monterey County will
provide the Board with a plan that satisfies solid waste disposal needs
for the next 70 years, eliminating the painstaking need to go through
the process every 10 years.”
The public will have numerous opportunities to comment on the proposed
new landfill site. Subsequent meetings will help the Authority staff identify
the range of actions, alternatives, and significant effects to be analyzed
as they proceed with siting a new landfill.
Phase II of the project will proceed after landowners have been contacted
and provide Authority staff and engineering consultants access to the
recommended areas for further environmental and geotechnical review.
A copy of the final version of the Phase I Landfill Siting Study that
was completed January 2004 can be reviewed on the Authority website (www.svswa.org).
The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of
the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well
as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the
environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education
and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can
be reached at 755-1300 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday or
on the web at www.svswa.org.
