NEW OPERATING AGREEMENT APPROVED FOR JOLON ROAD TRANSFER STATION

May 26, 2004

The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) and Waste Management, owner of the Jolon Road Transfer Station in King City, have entered into a new three-year operating agreement. Waste Management will operate the Jolon Road Transfer Station and transfer the waste to Johnson Canyon Road Landfill in Gonzales.

The Jolon Road Landfill and Transfer Station has been owned by Waste Management since the late 1990s and has been leased by the County of Monterey, which the Authority inherited when it was formed in 1997.

The lease was scheduled to expire on June 2, 2004 and consequently all operation of the transfer station and scale house would cease unless a new agreement could be reached. The Authority and Waste Management negotiated the new operating agreement in an effort to prevent an interruption of service to the self-haul customers in South County as well as to avoid a potential customer rate increase for future direct haul services.

According to Mark Arsenault, General Manager for Waste Management, “We look forward to working with the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority as the new operator of the Jolon Road Transfer Station. We will promote the efficient operation of the scale house, proper disposal and recycling of waste, as well as maintain diversion programs to help South County residents continue to divert materials from the landfills.”

Norcal Engineering and Construction Service’s current operation of the transfer station and scale house will cease with the expiration of the existing lease. Waste Management has agreed to hire all displaced Norcal workers at the Jolon Road site if they are not reassigned. Norcal will continue to operate the two landfills in the Salinas Valley through an agreement executed with the Authority in August 2000.

Stephen Johnson, General Manager for the Authority says, “We are pleased to have this opportunity to work with Waste Management. We are confident they will operate the transfer station in a professional, cost-efficient manner while maintaining security and convenience for every customer.”
