Sun Street Transfer Station Opens
January 7, 2005
The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) officially opened their
new Sun Street Transfer Station on January 3, 2005.
The new facility located at 139 Sun Street in Salinas, will be used to
accept the self-haul and residential waste currently going to the Madison
Lane Transfer Station.
As a special grand opening incentive to their loyal customers, all self-haul
loads will be discounted by $3 to the first 350 customers.
The new transfer station will process up to 100 tons of waste per day,
where it will then be transferred to Crazy Horse or Johnson Canyon Landfills.
As the Authority continues to work in partnership with state and local
governments to maintain their member cities 50 percent reduction in solid
waste disposal, a recycling center and household hazardous waste facility
is also located at the new Sun Street site, where residents can deposit
most of their recyclables and hazardous materials FREE of charge.
According to Stephen Johnson, general manager for the Authority, “We
believe the new Sun Street Transfer Station is more efficient than the
former facility for customer drop-off. We will provide residents with
a cleaner, friendlier, more convenient location to continue to service
their disposal needs. The facility also maintains the same convenient
operating hours and pricing structure as the old facility on Madison Lane.”
The Sun Street Transfer Station will be operated by NorCal Engineering
& Construction Services and will be open Monday – Saturday 8
a.m. – 5 p.m. For additional information regarding the new Sun Street
Transfer Station please call 424-5520 for questions regarding household
hazardous waste and 424-5535 for self-haul and recycling questions.
The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of
the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well
as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the
environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education
and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can
be reached at 755-1300 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday or
on the web at www.svswa.org.
