SVSWA MASCOT IS LOOKING FOR A NAME

March 1, 2005

Residents Urged To Enter The Name The Mascot Contest and Win $100

The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) announced today the beginning of the "Name Our Mascot" contest. The contest is open to all residents, children and adults, who would like to help the Authority name their recycling mascot. Stephen Johnson, general manager for the Authority noted, "We're expecting it to be a great competition with entry’s from all over the Salinas Valley."

The Authority mascot is a costumed caricature that promotes environmental stewardship while urging Salinas Valley residents to “close the loop” by actively recycling, reusing material and buying recycled content products.

The Authority's recycling mascot, who has gone unnamed for over four years, needs and deserves a name that reflects his/her character and heritage.

The contest is open to all Salinas Valley residents and will run through March 31, 2005. Judging will be completed by the SVSWA staff and the winner will be notified and the $100 award presented within 30 days of the conclusion of the contest. The winner’s name and the winning entry will be promoted on the Authority website and in the local print media.

To enter the contest visit the Authority website (www.svswa.org) and click on "Help Us Name Our Mascot" on the What’s New Page. You can enter on line or download the entry blank and send it directly to the Authority office at 337 Melody Lane, Salinas, CA 93901. For additional information call 755-1300.

The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can be reached at 755-1300 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday or on the web at www.svswa.org.
