SVSWA Names Recycling Mascot
May 9, 2005
The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) joyfully announces the
birth of their recycling mascot Wally Waste-Not.
A Salinas Valley resident submitted the winning name in the Authority’s
name the recycling mascot contest. Martin Galicia beat 90 other entries
with the name of Wally Waste-Not and awarded a $100 check and website
recognition for the winning entry.
According to Stephen Johnson, general manager for the SVSWA, “We
received creative entries from all over the Salinas Valley and we look
forward to developing more unique opportunities to promote recycling throughout
our service area with Wally Waste-Not.”
The newly-named recycling mascot will continue to be the star of the Authority’s
school recycling program, Recycle-Rama and will be highlighted in their
community outreach programs that urge Salinas Valley residents to “close
the loop” by actively recycling, reusing material and buying recycled
content products.
The original mascot design was also the product of a community-wide contest.
Back in April of 2000 Beatrize Macias, a senior at Alvarez High School,
submitted the winning design for the character that promotes environmental
stewardship.
Since that time, the Authority’s recycling mascot was in need of
an identity that reflected its character and heritage. And thanks to Martin
Galicia Wally Waste-Not was born!
The Authority, formed in 1997, is a joint powers agency made up of
the cities of Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Salinas, Soledad as well
as the eastern half of unincorporated Monterey County. They promote the
environmental health of the Salinas Valley through planning, public education
and management of an innovative solid waste system. The Authority can
be reached at 755-1300 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday or
on the web at www.svswa.org.
