SALINAS VALLEY SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY OFFERS REWARD
IN VANDALISM INCIDENT AT CRAZY HORSE CANYON LANDFILL

SALINAS, Calif., July 3, 2006 … A $1,000 reward is being offered for anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction for last week’s vandalism of the groundwater treatment system at the Crazy Horse Canyon Landfill, 11 miles north of Salinas.
According to Stephen Johnson, SVSWA General Manager, on June 27th technicians found extensive damage made to the groundwater treatment system. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Department and all appropriate regulatory agencies were immediately notified.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department.
Johnson said the SVSWA also has been in contact with the landfill’s immediate neighbors to ensure them that there is no immediate threat of groundwater intrusion as a result of the vandalism, which is believed to have occurred no earlier than June 25.
“We have been assessing the physical damage to the system and have conducted extensive tests of the affected wells to check for any impact on the groundwater,” Johnson said.  Test results are expected back early next week.
“Obviously this act of malicious vandalism was a distressing discovery,” Johnson said, “but our crisis management plan was carried out to precision.  We acted swiftly and safely.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Joe Pedroza at the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department at 755-3752.
