HOW DO I KNOW WHAT PRODUCTS ARE HAZARDOUS?

Read the label carefully! Look for the words Danger, Warning or Caution on the label. A hazardous product has at least one of the following properties:

  • ToxicTOXIC:
    Poisonous or causes long-term illness. Pesticides, paint thinners, many auto products and some cleaners are toxic. Look for words on the label like, “Harmful or fatal if swallowed” or “Use only in a well-ventilated area”.

  • flammable FLAMMABLE:
    Burns easily. Paint, thinners and other solvents, and auto products are the most flammable materials used in the home. Look for words on the label like “Do not use near heat or flame”, “Combustible”, or do not smoke while using this product”.

  • CorrosiveCORROSIVE:
    Eats through different materials. Oven cleaners, drain cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners and auto batteries are common corrosive products. Look for words on the label like “Causes severe burns on contact”, or “Can burn eyes, skin, throat.”

  • Reactive REACTIVE:
    Can explode when exposed to heat, air, water or shock.

Automotive Products


Used Motor Oil & Filters Flammable Recycle.Take to the local
recycling location in your
area (link to Co. site)
Antifreeze Poisonous & Flammable Dangerous to animals & children because of its sweet taste. Don’t pour antifreeze down the drain. Take to an HHW site (link to SVSWA)
Car batteries Corrosive (acid) Trade in for new battery or
take to recycling center.
Gasoline Flammable Prevent fuel from breaking
down by using a fuel
additive for long-term
storage. Take bad fuel to
HHW facility. Mix old fuel
with a tank of gasoline.
     

 

IN THE SHED…

Paint and Solvents


Paint Flammable

Latex: If only a small amount is left (one inch or less), open can and let
liquid evaporate outdoors, away from children and pets. Dispose of can in the trash with lid off.

Oil Based: take paint containing lead and cans of latex paint too full to dry out at HHW collection site.

Paint Thinner Flammable Recycle by storing in a closed jar until particles settle. Strain off the clear liquid for reuse. Dry remaining sludge, wrap in plastic and discard in the trash.
Solvents, wood preservatives, Chemicals Flammable Take to HHW collection site.

IN THE HOUSE….

Cleaners


Drain, oven and toilet, bowl cleaners & bleach Corrosive/Poisonous Use up according to label directions or offer to others that can use them. Dispose of small amounts by pouring down drain with lots of water.
Furniture polish, spot removers Flammable Use up according to label directions or offer to others
that can use them or take to HHW facility.
Hobby Chemicals Varies Call the HHW facility for disposal of specific chemicals.
     
     

IN THE YARD…

Pesticides/Herbicides


Weed killer, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizer Poisonous Take to the HHW collection facility. Pesticides that are not banned may be used up according to label directions or offered to others that can use them.
Empty pesticide Containers Poisonous residue Rinse container three times and save rinse water and use as full-strength pesticide. Wrap container in plastic bag and discard in the trash.
